Master Classes

In April, Queensland held their annual master classes. A big thank you must go the organizers Melissa West, Debbie & Selina Holdstock and the teachers who assisted. We would like to thank the Examiners, Mrs Nicole Ashfield, Mrs Hayley Predl and Mrs Simone Dawson for the making themselves available for the students. Once again the Master classes provided a fabulous opportunity for students participating and also teachers, to observe the expertise of the ATOD Examiners and gain further knowledge.

Teacher Training Course

Queensland once again held the Introductory Unit of the Teachers course. Thank you to Mrs Simone Dawson who conducted this course. We would like to wish the new students to this course all the best and are looking forward to the next generation of teachers coming through!

State Competitions & Scholarships

Once again this year Queensland is holding its competitions at both the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane. Thank you to the teachers and studios for supporting these events and to the outstanding work of the organizers. We are sure both events will be better than ever!

Queensland State Scholarships are scheduled for the 24th-25th of May. We are pleased to report that all scholarships sections will be held and are bigger than ever.

VICTORIAN NEWS

Victorian Syllabus Seminar and Revisions

Four days of intensive training and activity, involving many new members, as well as familiar faces, occurred in January at the Crazy Feet Studios in Burwood, Victoria. The four days were extremely well run, facilitated and administered by Karen Malek and Cheryl Witchell. We were lucky to have choreographers who had been part of the teams devising each syllabus to present the work in each style.

As well as learning syllabus work, the program provided a forum for new teachers to view and purchase syllabi, CDs and DVDs, ask questions and find out more about our society. Having examiners and Board Members in attendance helped immensely and many teachers new to our society were very impressed with both the friendliness and the professionalism of ATOD.

The first day was an introduction to our new Hip Hop syllabus. Bonnie Bourke, from Queensland and Shane Clarke took the seminar, which was met with great enthusiasm by all. The next two days were taken by Paul Malek on the highly-successful Jazz Moves syllabus, and the final day introduced us to the new changes and exciting new work in our Tap Syllabus. This session was taken by Paul Davis, and was followed by an open Tap class for all present.

Everyone agreed that it had been a most worth-while four days. We look forward to using the work in our classes, and to the continued involvement in our various activities of the new members.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA NEWS

Dance trip to Melbourne

On Thursday 10th April eight students aged 13 years along with two teachers from Footprintz Dance Academy in Western Australia flew to Melbourne on our first dance development trip.

The five day trip was designed to expose students to professional dance classes, different styles of teaching and the diverse avenues that are available to dancers in Australia.

The students attended classes at Dance Factory & MAPA in the following dance styles: classical, jazz, hip hop, lyrical and tap. Whilst in Melbourne we went to see the production of 'Guys & Dolls' and we were also given the chance to watch classes at the Australian Ballet School.

The trip was amazing!! Both the students and teachers were inspired, challenged, motivated and gained a greater appreciation of the arts.
